Chapter 13

From the notes of the psychiatrist assigned to Subject Z: …while not yet a teenager, signs of arrogance are manifesting.

At his reply, Kalini blinked. “What do you mean?”

“You asked about my cologne. I’m not wearing any.” He grinned.

“Then it’s your soap.” She tried to find an excuse.

“I’ve not had a proper shower since they caught me.” Which made him long for some soap to scrub away their touch. He knew what kind of samples they’d bled and milked him for.

“Well, good for you, even when you stink, you smell good.”

“Thanks, I think.” His lips twitched. She was a foot shorter than him with an arrogant attitude. Her skewed bangs didn’t detract from her fierce cuteness. Even more attractive, she wasn’t impressed by him at all. “Since I’m pretty sure you want to change topics, let’s go back to shifting. The tail is obviously in place. What about claws?”

She held out her hands. “In need of a manicure but not gnarly.”

“Feet?”

“I’m able to wear open-toe sandals if that helps.”

“Horns?”

She pressed her lips before shaking her head.

“Don’t lie. I can see their outline. Have they ever come out?”

She shrugged. “Not that I’ve noticed.”

“Wings?”

“No.”

“Are you sure?”

“Would you like me to strip so you can look?” she snapped.

“As a matter of fact, I’d love to see you naked,” he drawled.

“Not happening,” she lied. He caught it only because her heat trended upwards.

“You’re the one who offered.”

“It’s called sarcasm.”

“Actually, I would have said deflection. We both know you’d like to get naked for me.”

“Would not,” she huffed. “And you’re really starting to piss me off.”

“Angry enough to shift?” He tried to catch her off guard.

“Because I can do it, just like that?” She clicked her fingers.

“You obviously need to practice. Think of it as a muscle. You never learned how to use it, and it’s going to take practice to exercise it and manipulate it like it’s meant.”

“I thought shapeshifting only happened during full moons.”

“The urge can be stronger, mostly because the lunar light ignites usually dormant pheromones in the atmosphere that affect certain species.”

“Moon madness is real. Cool. Maybe I should dance naked in its light one night.”

He heard her sarcasm, but he answered with all seriousness. “You should definitely try it. Very liberating. But the next one isn’t for two weeks, and you should start learning how to control it now.”

“I don’t know what you mean by control.”

“I think you do, but you’re scared to try.” He deliberately goaded her. Heightened emotions would make it more likely to happen.

“Try to what? Wish my tail gone? Don’t you think I’ve wished it away?” She huffed in hot irritation.

“It won’t ever fully go away. It’s a part of you.”

“It’s a hunk of dead meat.” She deliberately leaned over and grabbed it, heaving it. It hung in her grip. “It doesn’t do anything.

“It doesn’t move at all?”

She shook her head. “Never has. I don’t feel it either. It’s the reason I can contort and hide it.”

“You have to feel something.” He reached out to touch the warm scales.
